TEHRAN- Over 5.25 million tons of goods were transited via Iran during the first five months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-August 22), according to Mohammad-Javad Atrchian, the director of transit department at Iran’s Roads Maintenance Organization.

The transited goods mostly consisted of oil and petrochemical products as well as cotton, the IRNA news agency reported on Monday.

About 2.613 million metric tons of transited goods were oil products and 2.642 million metric tons were non-oil products, he noted.

The volume of transited goods did not change compared to the same period in the past year.

Iraq and Turkey were the main countries which transited goods via Iran, each accounting for 10 percent of transited consignments.

Transit of goods via the country rose by 6.5 percent in the past Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, compared to the year before.

Over 12.3 million tons of goods were transited via the country in the previous calendar year.
